Chandratal Lake Road Trip is a thrilling adventure that takes you through the picturesque landscapes of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. This safari offers an exciting opportunity to explore the rugged terrain, high mountain passes, and serene valleys, while traversing in a sturdy jeep. The safari usually begins from the popular hill station of Manali, located in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. From Manali, embark on a thrilling journey towards the mesmerizing Chandratal Lake, situated at an altitude of about 4,300 meters (14,100 feet) in the Spiti Valley.
As you continue, you’ll pass through picturesque villages like Khoksar, where you can catch glimpses of the local way of life. The road leads you to Chhatru, taking you along the scenic Chandra River. The river flows parallel to the road, adding to the beauty of the journey.
The landscapes around Chhatru are rugged and awe-inspiring, with rocky cliffs and vast open spaces. The next leg of the journey takes you from Chhatru to Batal, a small village located at an altitude of around 4,270 metres (14,010 feet). The road passes through challenging terrain, including stretches of rocky paths and river crossings.
Batal is known for its picturesque location and serves as a popular pit stop for travellers. The final stretch of the route leads you from Batal to the enchanting Chandratal Lake. This section is considered the most adventurous part of the journey, with steep ascents and hairpin bends.

As you approach Chandratal, the landscapes become even more dramatic, with snow-capped peaks and vast meadows. The road ends near the lake, and from there, a short hike takes you to the mesmerising shores of Chandratal. By Road: The quickest and most economical way to get to Manali. Manali is accessible by road from several locations, including Delhi (540 km), Chandigarh (305 km), Dehradun (227 km), and Ambala (370 km).
By Train: The closest railway station to Manali is Jogindernagar. Other train routes to Manali include those through Chandigarh and Ambala.

Day 1: Manali Sightseeing Highlights
Welcome to Manali! After check-in explore the local gems by walk
- Hadimba Devi Temple – A beautiful wooden temple nestled in cedar forest.
- Manu Temple – Dedicated to Sage Manu, offering scenic views and calm vibes.
- Mall Road – Explore local shops, cafes, and Tibetan markets.
- Van Vihar – A peaceful nature park ideal for a stroll or paddle boating.
- Tibetan Monasteries – Dive into local culture and pick up some unique souvenirs
Day 2: Manali- Chandratal
- Wake up and knowledge of the majestic views of the valley. The road to Spiti has more mud and rocks than anything else! there’s hardly any tar to be seen anywhere! you’ll find waterfalls, and pagal nalas all on the road!
- There are no phone services or electricity at Batal. Once you reach Batal, continue towards Kunzum Pass top.
- Slightly before Kunzum top, you’ll notice another narrow dirt road towards your left.
- There’s also a board there naming it as Chandratal Road. activate this road, drive carefully, and 14 kilometers later, you’ll be at Chandratal.
Day 3: Chandratal-Manali
- In the morning after breakfast, we leave for Manali via the Atal Tunnel.
- Our wonderful experience of trekking in Himachal ends.
